Komo spindle arriving to our facility

This particular Komo spindle was in very poor condition, the taper ID was visibly damaged. Due to the taper contact being poor it required GPG (ground-plate-ground). With our in-house grinding capabilities, we were able to get this spindle in and out in no time, which was perfect for the customer because this Komo spindle was a QTA (quick turnaround).

Along with the taper ID being damaged and worn so were all bearings, rust was even noted in the bearings. All bearing needed replacing, and were replaced with ABEC7 bearings.

The drawbar of this Komo spindle was initially seized in the shaft, the nut seized onto the drawbar threads. Also, many washers on the drawbar were found to be broken. All parts on the drawbar needed replacing, therefore the entire drawbar needed to be rebuilt. Correspondingly found was that the rotary union and gripper also need to be replaced with new.

This spindle left High Speed Technologies looking beautiful and running top notch with all new bearings, seals, drawbar springs, rotary union and gripper.

Here at High Speed Technologies we have seen just about everything. Compared to the above Komo spindle we just spoke about that was in very rough shape, this Komo 103208 Spindle arrived with normal wear and tear.

The bearing were a bit worn and fretted with some particulate noticed in them. Also, normal wear and tear was noticed on the drawbar springs. Overall in comparison this was a very easy fix. All bearings, seals and drawbar springs were replaced with new.

Cause of failure for this Komo 103473 spindle was many things. First noticed was the bearings were noisy and due to the spindle trying to change tools at 16,000 RPM it caused fretting on the inner races of the bearings. Wood debris was also found in all bearing lubrication and within the bearings themselves.

Second item noticed was the drawbar was broken. The drawbar adjustment spline was friction welded to the wrench flats. The drawbar was actuated while the shaft was rotating causing the actuator and drawbar to friction weld together, due to this the drawbar damage required machining and welding. Some of the Belleville washer were found to be broken as well.

Couple other things noted in examining this Komo spindle, the gripper fingers were worn and the sensor malfunctioned. Gripper fingers, bellevilles, bearings and seals were all replaced with new. Once HST was finished with this spindle it was up and running like new.

The customer of this Komo 103473 spindle stated to us that the machine was having problems reading the speed sensor, and that the machine said the spindle had stopped but was still spinning down. Also, that the spindle was trying to change while rotating.

While we were inspecting this Komo spindle we found the shaft was very hard to spin even by hand. We determined that the drawbar had seized, this was due to the fact the actuator piston made contact with the drawbar while at high speeds. This resulted in the drawbar end friction welding to the unclamp piston. This was the cause of failure. Both pieces required machining to correct the problem. Along with machining all Belleville washer were also replaced.
