Saccardo Elettromeccanica Srl can trace their roots back to 1958 when they started manufacturing electric motors. By the end of the 1990s they started manufacturing their first spindle motors. But it wasn’t until 2001 that they really started specializing in spindles for CNC stone cutting. Today Saccardo manufactures a broad line of high quality and very robust spindles. They find many applications in glass processing and stone cutting as well as other processes.

Below are other examples of HST’s OEM-quality repairs on Saccardo spindles.

Job I-1213

This Saccardo VA 25 spindle was off of a Prussian CNC stone cutting machine. It came in completely seized.  This was a result of a catastrophic failure of the #2 bearing.  Stone cutting spindles lead a rough life.

Saccardo spindle destroyed bearings

# 2 Bearing is totally destroyed. The Cage is split.

But that’s not all we found. We were unable to eject the tool.  The drawbar was not traveling far enough when actuated.  We soon found why. The drawbar nut was worn down about 6mm from contacting the actuator while rotating. And the Actuator face was also worn.

Now we had to discover the root cause of the failure. We had two possible suspects. The first was a potential machine problem that we have run into before with HSD spindles. In the case of the HSD spindle the machine would issue a tool release command while the spindle was still turning driving the actuator into the drawbar.

Fortunately this time it turned out to be a little more mundane. The gripper assembly had unscrewed. This allowed the drawbar to spring back into the actuator even when the actuator was retracted.

Here is a before and after of the Saccardo drawbar nut on the shaft.

The unclamp actuator that contacts the drawbar nut was also worn down and damaged. This part was also “hard-welded” up and the precision ground to required dimensions.

Before a spindle is repaired all of the parts are cleaned, inspected and laid out.

The spindle is carefully assembled. Once the spindle is fully assembled our stringent test procedures begin. The spindle is checked for run-out on the taper and on a certified test bar at 300 mm. The spindle is instrumented and run-in. Vibration, balance and temperature are all monitored during run-in.

After run-in the spindle is “trim-balanced” at high speed to ensure that it performs like the day it came out of the factory or sometimes even better.

When we finished, the spindle ran great and is back cutting stone for a happy customer.

After working with Prussiani on fixing the hydraulic problem that destroyed our spindle, we are up and running and the spindle seems to be working well.  Thanks for your help!”

Job I-0643

When we received this VS14 spindle for repair we were amazed that it still turned by hand. It was rough. Usually stone cutting spindles are seized up by time we get them. These Saccardo VS14 series spindles are rugged units.

Saccardo VS 14 spindle recieved dirty

This Saccardo VS 14 series spindle was in better shape than most when we received it. That having been said there is visible damage to the taper assembly. It had excessive run-out and very low pull force.

All of our Saccardo spindle repairs start with a forensic analysis. We carefully examine each component to determine the cause of failure. After that we provide a full report to our customers so they know exactly what went wrong and what they are paying for.

The reason for the low pull force was immediately evident as soon as we removed the drawbar. Many of the Belleville springs had failed from fatigue. At HST it’s standard procedure to replace all springs on every rebuild.

Like most stone cutting spindles we receive for repair, this one needed our GPG process. The taper was in pretty bad shape.  It was restored to like new condition.

When the spindle repair was complete the run-out on the taper was less than 1 and only 12 µm at the end of a 300 mm test bar.  The pull force was completely restored and the spindle ran like new.
